“Older Than We’ve Ever Been” by Richard F. Yates

My younger daughter, Elvis, turns 16 today, but has a cold and isn’t looking forward to school. She is decidedly grouchy. Her mom asked her if she felt different today, now that she’s 16, and she made an unhappy face and shook her head.

Trying to be helpful, I said, “Just wait until you’re 41. Then you’ll just want to punch everybody.”

Ellie snickered, and Mariah (the Mom) said, “That’s where you get your grouchiness.”
