“A Place” by Richard F. Yates

I would like, as a work of art or a performance or an environment, to open a CLUB or PUB or LODGE—some form of public gathering site, in which every aspect: lighting, music, chairs, tables, the smell of the air, color and texture of the floors and ceilings—every element is considered and modified in some way to make it uncommon, unexpected, un-the-same as other public gathering spaces. I don’t want to sell things (drinks, food, art, key chains, products) or provide any kind of service (shows or concerts or plays or performances), just have a place where people can BE in an uncommon way—and talk—and maybe read—and listen to music, but only pre-recorded music, so there’s no performance element—other than the people who are gathered there. And no two chairs will be alike!
