“Reading List from March to August” by Richard F. Yates

Reading List

(5 March 2013)
Finished rereading David Hopkins’s DADA AND SURREALISM: A VERY SHORT INTRODUCTION while waiting in the car for Frankie outside of a doctors’ office in Scappoose, Oregon.

(13 March 2013)
Finished reading Tristan Tzara’s 7 DADA MANIFESTOS AND LAMPISTERIES.

(15 March 2013)
Finished rereading Marc Dachy’s DADA – THE REVOLT OF ART.

(22 March 2013)
Finished reading the very short MACHINE-BREATH BRIDGE by C. J. Cala. I liked the cover…

(24 March 2013)
Finished rereading Daniel Marzona’s CONCEPTUAL ART.

(29 March 2013)
Read SCOTT PILGRIM’S PRECIOUS LITTLE LIFE graphic novel by Bryan Lee O’Malley. Very, very similar to the film, word for word in many places, but still fun.

(1 April 2013)
Finished reading THE UBU PLAYS (UBU REX, UBU CUCKOLDED, and UBU ENCHAINED) by Alfred Jarry, translated by Cyril Connelly and Simon Watson Taylor.

(2 April 2013)
Finished reading STEAL LIKE AN ARTIST by Austin Klein. Quick, fun read.

(? April 2013) [glitch-lost some text, at least the date…maybe more]
Finished reading EXQUISITE CORPSE – SURREALISM AND THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER by Mark Nelson and Sarah Hudson Bayliss. Yucky. Crime scene photos and many disturbing Surrealist works, which often deal with mutilations and dismemberment. I definitely prefer Dada.

(7 May 2013)
Read a “book,” which was basically a short story, called BERMUDA’S TRIANGLE by Karen Jones. Not really my thing.

(8 May 2013)
Finally finished reading Mark Twain’s THE MAN THAT CORRUPTED HADLEYBURG AND OTHER STORIES. It was good, but most of the stories were not funny. It was a later, much darker book than some of his that I’ve read.

(18 May 2013)
Finished reading A PRINCESS OF MARS by Edgar Rice Burroughs, the first John Carter novel. Pretty darn good, in a silly, Saturday morning serial kind of way.

(30 May 2013)
Finished rereading THE HITCHHIKER’S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY by Douglas Adams. It’s been at least a decade since I last read it, but it’s still a pretty fun book.

(3 June 2013)
Finished rereading Volume 1 of Rumiko Takahashi’s RANMA 1/2. Always a fun story.

(6 June 2013)
Reread, for the I-don’t-know-how-manyth time, Lewis Carroll’s ALICE’S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND. It still makes me laugh.

(7 June 2013)
Finished rereading Volume 2 of RANMA 1/2.

(7 June 2013)
Finished reading a “book” (although I’d consider it more of an essay, though a very good essay) called ALL THE YOUNG DUDES – WHY GLAM MATTERS by Mark Dery. I’m a fan of glam and of Bowie, and I did find the essay enjoyable. I wish it was 200 pages longer, but it was still good.

(7 June 2013)
Finished rereading Volume 3 of RANMA 1/2.

(8 June 2013)
Finished rereading Volumes 4 and 5 of RANMA 1/2.

(12 June 2013)
Finished reading THE WILLOWS by Algernon Blackwood. Excellent creepy tale.

(30 June 2013)
Read THE EXORCIST by William Peter Blatty. Started it yesterday afternoon. Finished it in fewer than 24 hours. VERY similar to the film, in fact word for word in most spots. I’d never read the book. Now I have.

(7 July 2013)
Read DEAD EVER AFTER by Charlaine Harris, the last Sookie Stackhouse book. Easy, fun read, as all these books have been, but a bit too “set um up, knock um down” for my taste. She invoked a “Devil” character, but didn’t use him at all, beyond the first few pages of the book. What a waste!

(14 July 2013)
Finally finished reading Neil Gaiman’s AMERICAN GODS. Good book. It shouldn’t have taken as long to read, but I was reading it mostly at night and I think it creeped me out successfully enough that I had to stop reading it several times to avoid “the weirds.” (A nighttime affliction I sometimes suffer.)

(30 July 2013)
Finished RED NAILS by Robert E. Howard, a Conan novel. First Conan book that I’ve read. Good, mindless violence—a fun diversion, if nothing else.

(25 August 2013)
Finished William Peter Blatty’s LEGION, sequel to THE EXORCIST. Pretty dull. Never really got started.

(26 August 2013)
Finished rereading Lewis Carroll’s THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS. Still great, but very silly!
